In defense of its borders with regard to the French King François 1st. He bought from the Earl of Agimont-Givet and its 25 villages a rocky peak at the height of Givet in order to block the Meuse.

He built two bastions in his name: Charlemont (Le Bastion and Bastion Du Moulin De La Meuse). Later the fort was linked to the Citadel Du Comte De Namur.
